Mumbai: Scammers defrauded a 37-year-old guy out of Rs 55 lakh by promising him a petrol pump dealership.
The complaint is a Dhule resident, the Dhule police claim. In November of last year, he included his contact information on a page that contained facts on a gas pump dealership. Later, someone called him and asked whether he would be interested in purchasing a dealership.
The caller then urged the complaint to fill out a registration form by clicking on a website and providing the necessary information. The con artist called the complainant on November 14 to let him know that he will be charged for registration.
The accused then gave the complainant a fake invoice, the beneficiary's bank account information, and instructions to transfer the funds to the specified bank account.
The complainant then transferred Rs 55 lakh in seven internet transactions. After paying the cash, the complainant became skeptical when he did not hear from the scammer again, and with more investigation, he discovered that he had been tricked.
The Dhule police then filed a case under sections 318 (cheating), 319 (cheating by personation), and 66D (cheating by personation by utilizing computer resource) of the Information Technology Act after he filed an online complaint at the cybercrime portal.
