Mumbai CA Driven to Suicide After ₹3 Crore Blackmail by Instagram ‘Friends

MUMBAI: After undergoing constant harassment that compelled him to spend over ₹3 crore (US$364,000) over the course of 18 months, 32-year-old chartered accountant Raj Leela More tragically committed suicide at his Santacruz house. Two people, Rahul Parwani (26), an aspiring model, and Saba Qureshi (22), whom More met on Instagram, are accused by police of carrying out the extortion. The two are accused of obtaining compromising video footage and threatening to release it to the public unless he received the money. In a three-page suicide note, More specifically blamed the two for his demise, pointing to the ongoing threats, coerced payments, and psychological suffering.

When a financial and emotional toll is revealed, Mumbai police file charges.

While the accused collected monthly loan EMIs, More was forced to spend his personal savings, steal money from his business account, and even buy a fancy car in his name, according to Mumbai's Vakola police. Despite his prior police reports, he was unable to evade the growing pressure. More consumed poison on Saturday night while his sick mother slept close by. At a hospital, he was found comatose and subsequently declared dead. Charges of extortion and aiding suicide have been filed by the police under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Behind the Scenes: The Weaponization of Social Media Trust

Strategies for Digital Grooming

According to police, Parwani first reached out on Instagram and progressively gained Qureshi's trust before enlisting him in the plot. Their strategy combined digital control and personal manipulation, and it was strengthened by threats of exposing private information. The abuse intensified, involving trips to More's house, charges regarding private tapes, public humiliation, and emotional abuse directed at both him and his mother.

Financial Control as Leverage

More’s access to corporate finances was exploited. Investigators found he was forced to divert company funds to the extortionists. A luxury SUV was purchased in his name, with More coerced into paying EMIs. Police are auditing transactions traced to Parwani—₹2.44 crore—and Qureshi—₹2.6 lakh.

Cybercrime, Mental Health, and Legal Responsibility

A Help Request Unheard

Deep anguish was evident in More's suicide notes. One apologized to his mother; another asked coworkers to pardon him for making unauthorized financial transfers; and a third held the extortionists legally and ethically accountable. According to his relatives, he was a high-earning professional who survived cancer and was destroyed by malevolent persuasion.

Police Conduct an Investigation with Global Consequences

A manhunt has been started by Mumbai police. Parwani and Qureshi are accused of fraud, extortion, and aiding and abetting suicide. The case draws attention to critical weaknesses in cybercrime prevention and social media safety. Authorities advise people to exercise caution when establishing relationships online, particularly when they are under financial strain or the material is compromised.
