By apprehending Dipankar Das, a contract worker at a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), Kolkata Police have broken up a significant counterfeit passport ring. Nearly 30,000 people, mostly Bangladeshi nationals, were issued phony Indian identity certificates, according to a database found on Das's electronic devices.
European Visas and False Documents Found
Das enabled the production of phony Indian identity documents, primarily counterfeit passports, according to the study. In addition to these, officials confiscated counterfeit documents from two well-known public sector banks and visas for a particular European nation.
To find out where these people are, their information has been distributed to nearby police stations. According to Kolkata Police, many of these forged passports were used by infiltrators from Bangladesh to enter nations like France and Italy illegally. This concerning development has been communicated to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Two contract employees were among the five people arrested.
Five people have been taken into custody by the police since Sunday in relation to this scheme, including Dipankar Das and Deepak Mandal, two contract POPSK employees. Samaresh Biswas and his son Ripon Biswas, who are suspected of being the operation's masterminds, are also being held.
The scope of the investigation is extended to permanent postal workers.
Investigators think that this scheme may involve permanent Indian Postal Department staff in addition to contract workers. Villages along West Bengal's international borders with Bangladesh are thought to be the origins of the racket.
As investigators strive to dismantle the entire network, the function of numerous post offices and passport processing centers is being scrutinized.
Global Repercussions
Evidence discovered by the authorities points to the illegal migration of Bangladeshi nationals to European nations being made possible by these forged passports. This finding reveals a serious compromise in the integrity and security of the passport issue process.
A vast network of forgeries has been exposed by Kolkata Police's prompt response, but officials think this is only the beginning. As the investigation progresses, more arrests and disclosures are anticipated.
