Chennai: This week, two men were detained in Tuticorin in relation to distinct cyber fraud cases that the Cyber Crime Wing of the Central Crime Branch had filed. Among these cases are a 1.02-crore fraudulent internet investment scheme and a 4.15-crore digital arrest hoax.
According to police, a 73-year-old Mylapore resident received WhatsApp calls from people impersonating as Mumbai Crime Branch, CBI, ED, and Interpol personnel. The callers demanded that he send 4.15 crore to several bank accounts, claiming it was for "RBI verification," and claimed that a SIM card in his name was used for illegal purposes. On October 13, a case was filed.
Manish Kumar, 23, of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, was identified by investigators as the owner of the number. On October 28, local police assisted in his arrest. He was remanded after being transported to Chennai under a transit warrant.
10 lakh of the fraudulent sum was moved to the bank account of Selvakumar, 35, of Kayalpattinam, Tuticorin, according to additional bank trail analysis. On November 18, Selvakumar was taken into custody.
Nishanth, 37, of Chidambara Nagar, Tuticorin, was detained by police in a different case related to a 1.02-crore trade fraud that targeted an Anna Nagar resident.
After downloading a trading program that was circulated via a WhatsApp group, the victim moved money across several bank accounts. When the victim attempted to withdraw money, he discovered he had been duped since the dashboard displayed fictitious gains. On October 9, a case was filed. 9.59 lakh was taken out of an account connected to Nishanth, according to investigators.
Nishanth and Selvakumar were taken to Chennai and placed under detention. The city police have recommended that individuals file complaints at www.cybercrime.gov.in or the helpline 1930.
