An Instagram data breach reportedly exposed the personal info of 17.5 million users

You're not the only person who has recently gotten numerous requests from Instagram to reset your password. The "sensitive information" of 17.5 million Instagram users was exposed in a data breach, according to Malwarebytes, an antivirus software business. According to Malwarebytes, the breach contained phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, Instagram usernames, and more.

According to the business, "data is available for sale on the dark web and can be abused by cybercriminals." In an email to its clients, Malwarebytes stated that the breach was found during a routine dark web scan and that it was connected to a possible event involving an Instagram API leak from 2024.

Users have received many emails from Instagram regarding demands to reset their passwords as a result of the reported breach. Malwarebytes claims that more significant attacks, such as phishing attempts or account takeovers, may result from the information that was disclosed. Although Meta hasn't made an official statement regarding the most recent incident, Instagram's parent firm has previously faced criticism for data breaches. It's always a good idea to update your password and enable two-factor authentication if you haven't already. Better yet, Meta's Accounts Center allows you to see which devices are connected to your Instagram account.
