An elderly citizen was defrauded of Rs 19 crore in Delhi's largest digital arrest scam.

New Delhi In a startling cybercrime case, scammers impersonating Enforcement Directorate (ED) personnel masterminded a complex scheme to cheat a 65-year-old Greater Kailash man out of almost Rs 19 crore. This incidence surpasses a previous Rs 12 crore scam in the city, making it one of the biggest examples of digital fraud in Delhi.

After becoming a victim of the scam, Arun Kumar Jain submitted a complaint via the Ministry of Home Affairs website. The scammers initially enticed the elderly man by promising to double his money through online investments, according to the Delhi Police Cyber Cell. The con artists found sizable sums of money in Jain's bank account, even though he chose not to proceed with the investments.

Later, Jain was contacted by someone claiming to be ED officers who demanded a video call to discuss the issue. In order to obtain comprehensive information about his banking credentials, the impersonators questioned him about the significant amount in his account during the call. The scammers froze his account after siphoning Rs 18.70 crore from it using this access.

When Jain reported the event via the Home Ministry's web, the crime was discovered. The Cyber Cell moved quickly to launch an inquiry and track down the offenders in Ahmedabad. Three people were taken into custody by the police in relation to the crime. Subsequent research showed that the accused used more than 750 bank accounts to carry out the complex fraud. To find the entire network and retrieve the stolen money, the Delhi Police Cyber Cell is currently at work.

This instance serves as a sobering reminder of how hackers are always changing their strategies and how important it is to have strong security measures and increased awareness in order to fight digital fraud.
