Sensitive personal data, including government-issued identification documents, bank account information, and Social Security numbers, were made public by the breach, which was discovered on October 10.
The attack started with a deceptive advertising campaign that led staff members to a phony login page that looked like a genuine third-party platform. When unwary workers provided their login information, attackers were able to access their accounts. The Maine Attorney General's Office was notified of the incident by General Dynamics, which verified that 37 people were impacted.
The attackers altered personal information, including bank account details, after they gained access to the hacked accounts. After identifying the illegal activities, General Dynamics immediately suspended service access and started informing the impacted employees that same day. All affected parties received written notifications this week.
The business made it clear that a third-party login gateway, not its internal systems, was the source of the incident. "The evidence that is currently available suggests that the unauthorized access was verified by the third party rather than by any General Dynamics business units directly," the company said.
General Dynamics is providing impacted employees with two years of free credit monitoring in an effort to lessen the effect. Additionally, they have advised people to change their Fidelity NetBenefits account login information and refrain from using passwords that have been hacked.
This year, Fidelity has been involved in another issue, this time a phishing attack. The financial services firm previously revealed security lapses that affected more than 100,000 clients on its investment and insurance platforms.
