A senior gentleman, a retired chief architect from Sector 10, was the victim of a ₹2.5 crore scam that was uncovered by the Chandigarh Cyber Cell. The victim was tricked by a clever "digital arrest" plan. Under the guise of law enforcement and judicial officers, three suspects have been captured in a multi-state operation.
Detailed Impersonation Trap Across TRAI, CBI, and Supreme Court The scam started in early May when the victim got a call from someone claiming that her SIM card had been used illegally. She was then added to high-pressure WhatsApp video calls with people posing as a CBI DIG and a Supreme Court judge, complete with fictitious arrest warrants and confidential seals. During this virtual "arrest," she was forced to transfer her life savings totaling ₹2.5 crore into several bank accounts that the scammers had set up, and the attackers threatened to detain her immediately or take legal action if she didn't comply.
The victim complained to the Sector-17 Cyber Cell in Chandigarh on June 1. Three suspects in Uttar Pradesh, including Hathras, Agra, and Saharanpur, were found through a quick investigation that included digital forensics, KYC checks, call record tracing, and IP analysis. Early in June, the accused, who ranged in age from 24 to 36, were located and taken into custody.
Investigators discovered that these people created and rented bank accounts with the express purpose of laundering the stolen money. One acknowledged giving the fraud ring access to his bank account in exchange for a 10% commission. In order to track down the network and retrieve the stolen funds, police have now taken them into custody and are extending their investigation.
