Six Arrested as digital arrest fraud syndicate is busted

A 71-year-old woman who was defrauded of Rs 49 lakh while under a 24-hour digital arrest submitted a formal complaint, which led to the proceedings.  Fraudsters used this method by posing as government and police officers, threatening legal action, and psychologically coercing victims into sending money.
 Investigators said that the accused used bogus case threats, constant video calls, and impersonation of law authorities to intimidate people.  The gang used multi-layered financial channels, transferring the victim's funds into several mule accounts set up by young people without jobs or with low incomes.

Six important operators were apprehended as a result of numerous searches in Aminabad, Hasanganj, Madey Ganj, and Sadar Cantt: Mohd Ovais (25), Vishal Tiwari (19), Shakeel Ahmad (53), Mohd Ahad (25), Mohd Atif (25), and Mohd Ujjaib (25).  Their backgrounds include hotel employees, school dropouts, and a tailor who is currently on trial under BNS sections 302/304B.  According to the police, these people were in charge of setting up and managing bank accounts that were used to receive and transfer fraudulent money, which was then taken out in cash from ATMs.
 In order to hide money trails, the syndicate allegedly established a network of mule accounts and used quick transfers and little withdrawals to evade discovery.  The organization recruited young people from crowded areas, taking advantage of their financial fragility, according to investigators.

Several complaints against the same network have been reported on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, according to officials, and more arrests are anticipated as digital forensics work.
