DEHRADUN (UK) : An accused person in a cyber fraud case worth Rs 84.7 lakh was successfully arrested by the Cyber Crime Police Station in Dehradun, which is a part of Uttarakhand STF. The accused reportedly used phony stock trading and initial public offering (IPO) websites to lure a resident of Dehradun into making fraudulent investments.
In October 2024, the victim filed a lawsuit, claiming that internet ads on social media sites like Instagram had lured them in. Following their interaction with these advertisements, the victim was connected to a WhatsApp group where the scammers pretended to be from reputable firms such as Religare Enterprises Ltd (a company registered on the NSE) and NWIL Securities.
Under the guise of lucrative investments, the accused utilized dishonest tactics to persuade the victim to register a trading account on a fraudulent platform and transfer money. The entire sum that was defrauded was Rs 84.7 lakh.
Operandi Modus
The accused ran ads targeting potential victims on social media sites including Facebook and Instagram. They said that investing in IPOs and stock trading would yield large returns. After becoming intrigued, victims were led to create accounts on phony websites that looked like trustworthy trading platforms.
To foster trust, the victims' deposited money was misrepresented as making enormous gains. The victims were then tricked into making bigger investments. In order to evade detection, the stolen money was subsequently moved across several bank accounts that were formed using fictitious identification.
Seizing and Arresting
Despite the accused's repeated location changes to avoid arrest, the police were able to hunt them down through careful technological investigation and digital evidence collection. The defendant, Durgesh, a 29-year-old Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, resident, was taken into custody. A cell phone, together with the SMS alert number linked to the bank account used in the scam, was confiscated by the police. Inspector Vijay Bharti oversaw the operation with the help of his staff. Senior Superintendent of Police (STF) Navneet Singh oversaw the investigation and resolution of the case by the Cyber Crime Police Station in Dehradun.
Advisory to the Public
The public was advised by the police to exercise caution and not fall for enticing investment proposals, fraudulent websites, or unsolicited commercials. It is recommended that citizens confirm the legitimacy of any investment opportunity before moving further and avoid disclosing personal information or papers to strangers or unknown callers. If you suspect fraud, call the closest police station right away or call the Cyber Crime helpline at 1930.
