GUJARAT-KOLKATA: A Kolkata-based lawyer gifted his wife an expensive mobile phone as a wedding anniversary gift. But this has led to a sudden raid by the Gujarat police at his home. The police have revealed that the phone the lawyer gifted to his wife is linked to a major cyber fraud case. Meanwhile, due to this shocking incident, a racket in which devices used in the crime are being resold as new is now being investigated in various states.

WHAT EXPENSIVE MOBILE PHONE SCAM 

According to the information received, earlier this year, the lawyer had bought a premium smartphone worth Rs 49,000 from a shop in Mission Raw Extension, Kolkata. The phone was properly sealed, and a GST bill was also issued with it. By all accounts, the phone appeared to be brand new. He gifted the phone to his wife on her wedding anniversary in February.
However, a few weeks later, police officers from Rajkot, Gujarat, reached the couple and said that the phone used by the lawyer's wife was found during an investigation into a cybercrime case. The police traced the phone's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number and confirmed that it matched the device used in an online fraud case.
Meanwhile, the couple said that they had bought the phone officially and had nothing to do with the cyber fraud. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the lawyer reached the Street Police Station in Kolkata and filed an official complaint against the shop that sold the phone.

The case was then transferred to the Bowbazar Police Station, under the jurisdiction of which the Karam shop falls. The police have since started questioning the shop owner and the distributor to find out who supplied the phone. However, no irregularities were found in the inspection of the shop's documents, and according to police sources, the focus is now on investigating the distributor who supplied the mobile phone.

The mobile phone has been seized and sent for forensic examination to find out who its previous owner was and whether it has been tampered with. It is being investigated whether this was a one-off incident or part of a larger racket of reselling used or damaged mobile phones as new.
A senior police officer said this could be the tip of the iceberg, adding that if there is a larger racket behind it, it could pose a big threat to consumers who unknowingly buy such phones. People think they are buying new phones, but they could end up in trouble with the law, the official added.

आखिर हुआ क्या था और कैसे होता है मोबाईल स्कैम ?

प्राप्त जानकारी के अनुसार, इस साल की शुरुआत में, वकील ने कोलकाता के मिशन रॉ एक्सटेंशन की एक दुकान से 49,000 रुपये का एक प्रीमियम स्मार्टफ़ोन खरीदा था। फ़ोन ठीक से सीलबंद था और उसके साथ एक GST बिल भी दिया गया था। सभी रिपोर्टों से, फ़ोन बिल्कुल नया लग रहा था। उन्होंने यह फ़ोन अपनी पत्नी को फरवरी में उनकी शादी की सालगिरह पर तोहफ़े में दिया था।

इस बीच, दंपति ने कहा कि उन्होंने फ़ोन आधिकारिक तौर पर खरीदा था और साइबर धोखाधड़ी से उनका कोई लेना-देना नहीं है। मामले की गंभीरता को देखते हुए, वकील कोलकाता के स्ट्रीट पुलिस स्टेशन पहुँचे और फ़ोन बेचने वाली दुकान के खिलाफ आधिकारिक शिकायत दर्ज कराई।
इसके बाद मामला बउबाजार पुलिस स्टेशन को स्थानांतरित कर दिया गया, जिसके अधिकार क्षेत्र में करम की दुकान आती है। पुलिस ने दुकान के मालिक और वितरक से पूछताछ शुरू कर दी है ताकि पता लगाया जा सके कि फ़ोन किसने सप्लाई किया था। हालाँकि, दुकान के दस्तावेज़ों की जाँच में कोई अनियमितता नहीं पाई गई, और पुलिस सूत्रों के अनुसार, अब ध्यान उस वितरक की जाँच पर है जिसने मोबाइल फ़ोन सप्लाई किया था।

मोबाइल फ़ोन को ज़ब्त कर लिया गया है और फ़ोरेंसिक जाँच के लिए भेज दिया गया है ताकि पता लगाया जा सके कि उसका पिछला मालिक कौन था और क्या उसके साथ छेड़छाड़ की गई है। इस बात की जाँच की जा रही है कि क्या यह एक बार की घटना थी या पुराने या क्षतिग्रस्त मोबाइल फ़ोनों को नए बताकर बेचने वाले किसी बड़े गिरोह का हिस्सा था।

एक वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारी ने कहा कि यह तो बस एक छोटी सी बात हो सकती है, और अगर इसके पीछे कोई बड़ा रैकेट है, तो अनजाने में ऐसे फ़ोन खरीदने वाले उपभोक्ताओं के लिए यह एक बड़ा ख़तरा बन सकता है। अधिकारी ने आगे कहा कि लोग सोचते हैं कि वे नया फ़ोन खरीद रहे हैं, लेकिन वे क़ानूनी पचड़े में पड़ सकते हैं।
