Rising Cybercrime and Online Frauds in Tiruchi City
Complaints related to cybercrimes and online frauds in Tiruchi City have been steadily increasing. In the last eight months of this year, losses due to cyber fraudsters amounted to ₹14.5 crore, according to complaints received by the Tiruchi City Cyber Crime Police. Of this, ₹2.29 crore has been successfully recovered.
Established in 2021, the Tiruchi City Cyber Crime Police Station receives 10 to 15 petitions daily, with a majority related to online financial frauds. While 44 cases were registered in 2024, 12 cases have been reported so far this year, of which 10 pertain to financial fraud, police sources revealed.
Criminals are using ingenious methods and leveraging technology to dupe victims and siphon money without their knowledge. Online scammers operate through various modes, targeting citizens to obtain sensitive information, gain unauthorised access to accounts, and commit fraud.
Reported complaints in Tiruchi include fake identity frauds, deceptive websites, financial scams, and digital arrest threats. Recently, the Tiruchi City Cyber Crime Police successfully arrested an accused in a digital arrest case.
Modus Operandi
Cybercriminals use different modus operandi to trap victims, including:
-
Online scams with deceptive schemes prompting money transfers
-
Online investment frauds
-
Online shopping scams
-
Job frauds
-
Phishing attacks to obtain passwords and credit card details
Unlike traditional crimes such as robbery, murder, burglary, and theft, cybercrimes are complex because criminals operate from unknown locations, posing challenges to investigators. Cybercriminals maintain a well-organized network, often using fake IDs and unreachable numbers, leaving minimal traces.
Online frauds also exploit government schemes and scholarships, along with fake advertisements offering heavy discounts in online shopping scams. Police sources cite lack of awareness, ignorance, fear, and greed as key reasons for the rise in cybercrimes.
Preventive Measures
The Cyber Crime Police have been actively sensitising the public to:
-
Avoid sharing personal information, including Aadhaar and PAN, with unknown callers
-
Refrain from downloading links from unauthorised sources
-
Use strong and secure passwords and update them regularly
-
Immediately register cyber complaints by contacting the toll-free number 1930
With these measures, authorities aim to reduce cybercrime incidents and protect citizens from financial and identity frauds.
