Clicked to buy milk, lost Rs 18.5 lakh: Mumbai woman duped in cyber fraud
A man who presented himself as an executive from the milk firm called the elderly woman. She received a link from the caller, who also told her to enter her personal information in order to place her order.

According to authorities on Saturday, an elderly woman in Mumbai lost Rs 18.5 lakh, her life savings, after she clicked on a fake link while attempting to get a litre of milk via an online delivery app.
On August 4, the 71-year-old woman, who resides in the Wadala district of the city, was the victim of a phone call from a man posing as "Deepak," a milk company official. According to an officer who spoke to news agency PTI, the caller sent her a link and told her to enter personal information in order to place her order.
According to the police, the woman stayed on the phone for about an hour and did as instructed. The scammer contacted again the next day and got more details.
Police think that after the accused clicked on the link, she was able to access her phone. The inquiry is underway, and a case has been filed.
The event occurs at a time when cybercrimes are on the rise in India, where scammers are increasingly using strategies like impersonating regular transactions to trick victims.
A Pune businessman lost Rs 2.3 crore to con artists impersonating cops earlier this month. In another case, phoney KYC update notifications were used to defraud a number of elderly people in Bengaluru.
Authorities have cautioned citizens about downloading apps from unreliable sources, sharing personal banking information, and clicking on unknown links. In order to access victims' accounts, thieves are increasingly posing as delivery people, telecom employees, or bank officials, the Reserve Bank of India has warned.
