Agartala: The Tripura Police have uncovered digital fraud worth ₹46.96 crore since 2021, with ₹5.2 crore seized and ₹34 lakh returned to victims, Director General of Police (DGP Anurag Dhyankar) said.

Agartala: The Tripura Police have uncovered digital fraud worth ₹46.96 crore since 2021, with ₹5.2 crore seized and ₹34 lakh returned to victims, Director General of Police (DGP Anurag Dhyankar) said.

  Special Drive to Recover Money

The DGP announced that a special three-month drive has been launched to recover the remaining defrauded amount after verification and checks.

 Rising Trend of Digital Fraud

According to police data:

  • 2021 → ₹1.98 crore lost

  • 2022 → ₹4.62 crore lost

  • 2023 → ₹9 crore lost

  • 2024 → ₹25.52 crore lost

However, the pace has slowed in 2025, with ₹10.36 crore lost till July 31.

  Steps Taken by Tripura Police

  • Launch of Tripura’s first cybercrime police station in June 2025

  • Deployment of specialized teams to trace fraud money

  • Awareness campaigns on cyber safety

  DGP’s Warning to Citizens

DGP Dhyankar cautioned citizens against:

  • Online financial gain offers

  • Unverified mobile apps

  • Sharing personal details or OTPs with unknown callers

He added: “Timely reporting can prevent further money transfer in cybercrime cases. Fraudsters today use fake accounts, mule accounts, blockchain, and VPNs to hide their tracks.”

  Emergency Helpline Numbers

Victims of cybercrime can immediately:

  • Call 112 (emergency helpline)

  • Call the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930

  • Visit the nearest police or cybercrime station

   Emerging Cybercrime Trends

According to DSP Deb, new cybercrime patterns include:

  • Fake gas & electricity bills

  • WhatsApp investment scams

  • Bank frauds through OTP theft

  • Lottery & OLX scams

  • Digital arrest schemes

  Growing Cyber Threats

“Digital convenience has made life easier, but also opened doors to cybercrimes. These crimes are faceless, borderless, and constantly evolving — one of the fastest-growing threats to individuals and governments,” DGP Dhyankar warned.
